Learn to Sail
New courses starting Spring Summer 2023.
Possibly the quickest and easiest way to learn to sail is by using dinghies.
Small boat “dinghies” are easy to handle and generally light to launch and transport. After you have learned to sail, you can sail in your own single-handed boat or in a two-person boat with a trained crew member.
Learning to sail is great fun, and at BCSC our RYA-approved volunteer instructors offer regular opportunities throughout the season to join a course and learn. We offer beginner instruction for both adults and juniors, and our courses are competitively priced, especially for new members. After completion, you can join in our regular sailing sessions where you can learn to race or just social sail. You are not left alone; our instructors and experienced sailors are always on hand to offer advice.
As an RYA-approved Training Centre, our lessons are taught using the RYA National & Youth Sailing Scheme. This syllabus allows you to continue your learning far beyond just learning to sail, and is a great way to safely acquire your sailing knowledge.
We generally combine both Level 1 and 2 into the same course.
- Level 1 – Goal – Introducing you to sailing with all you need to know to get afloat under supervision. How to sail in all directions, including awareness of launching and recovering. On completion, you would be able to sail in light winds under supervision.
- Level 2 – Goal – Setting out the foundations. Rigging, launching, sailing in all directions. Capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge. On completion, you would be able to sail and make decisions in good conditions.
We generally combine both Stage 1 and 2 into the same course. No minimum age but generally 8 years upwards.
- Stage 1 – Goal -A basic understanding of boat sailing, with some experience of steering and handling the boat. We cover launching and recovery, steering, boat parts and basic sailing. On completion, you will be able to steer and understand basic principles.
- Stage 2 – Goal – Introduce a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor. We cover basic sailing skills, ropework, and collision avoidance. On completion, you will be able to tack and control boat speed and understand basic principles.
All our sailors receive a RYA logbook on enrolment.
