New radios secured thanks to a grant from Torbay Council Community Fund

Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club has found a new level of connectedness, thanks to a grant from Torbay Council Community Fund.

The money has paid for three new ICOM Ic-M25 hand-held marine radios, which will help with sailing, kayaking and swimming events at BCSC, which operates from its clubhouse at Oddicombe Beach in Torquay.

The award has paid for three ICOM Ic-M25 hand-held marine radios.

Chris Stephens, head of fund-raising at the sailing club, said the new ICOM radios would do away with failed or garbled communications.

“Good radio communications continue to build trust, improve teamwork and reduce conflict by fostering understanding and clarity. It strengthens personal relationships, enhances safe sailing and gives confidence to all involved, often in critical situations.

“We are grateful for the support of Torbay Community Fund in helping the club purchase this excellent equipment.”

The Icom IC-M25 radios are ideal for the club to use. They are waterproof and float, and a “Float ‘n’ Flash” feature triggers a light if they are dropped in the water.

“We aim to deliver affordable sailing, kayaking and group swimming events, safely whilst operating efficiently and effectively,” Mr Stephens said.

“ICOM radios have an excellent reputation for reliability and clarity, making effective communication a reality between safety boat crews, fellow sailors and shore-based volunteers.

“For example, we will be using the radios to help with setting courses, advising on the status of sailing dinghies; calling for shore-based support including medical help and communication with other sailors in the vicinity. In emergency situations we now have the ability to contact HM Coastguard.

Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club is run entirely by volunteers and offers an affordable way for local people to get on the water.
